Nonprofit Management for High School Students

This course introduces high school students to the world of nonprofits and social enterprises. Students will explore how nonprofits operate as mission-driven businesses, learn about leadership, strategy, marketing, and finance, and gain hands-on experience in building organizations that make a difference in their communities. This course is open to high school students in Northern Arizona who are interested in leadership, social impact, or business. No prior experience required — just curiosity and a desire to make a difference!

Course Modality: This is an in-person program. Courses will take place at NAU's Flagstaff Mountain Campus in The W. A. Franke College of Business.

Course Instructor: Amanda Black

Amanda Black earned her doctorate in Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University in 2023 and has taught ESL, adult education, and college composition in the U.S. and abroad. Alongside her teaching, she has spent nearly a decade working at all levels of the nonprofit sector — from grassroots organizations to international development projects. Her experience includes leadership roles, such as serving as Executive Director of The Literacy Center in Flagstaff, as well as ongoing service on local nonprofit boards, grant panels, and community councils. Amanda is a passionate advocate for literacy, lifelong learning, and building strong nonprofit ecosystems. She is excited to bring this blend of academic and nonprofit expertise to NAU’s Nonprofit Center for Entrepreneurship.

Course Dates and Times: Class will take place in person each Thursday beginning October 9th, 2025 and concluding on December 11th, 2025. Class will run from 4:30-6:00 PM.

Students may withdraw from a course with a full refund up to one week prior to the course start date. There is a 50% administration fee for withdrawals from one week prior to the course start date until the day the course begins. After the course start date, refunds are no longer available.
