Full course description

2025 MiniComics: An Introduction to Self-Published Comics Summer Youth Camp

In this exciting 5-day summer camp, high school students will dive into minicomics, learning how to create, design, and publish small press comic books. Minicomics are an accessible and personal way to tell stories, and during this camp students will explore the history of indie comics and zines while developing their comic art skills.

Through critiques, individual work sessions, and expert guidance from NAU faculty and designer Shelby Rinke, students will participate in hands-on exercises, starting with an introduction to the fundamentals of comic-making, including storytelling, layout, and art styles. They will learn the process of brainstorming, sketching, and refining their comic ideas, and by the end of the workshop, students will have produced a printed and bound 8–12-page comic, ready to share with others. During this camp students will create and refine their comics, and focus on techniques such as character design, storytelling, and adding color and lettering. The final day of the camp will involve photocopying and distributing their comics among peers.

Join us at NAU in the School of Communication for a week of creativity, storytelling, and comic-making fun!
