Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI Fundamentals

This customizable professional development program provides a foundational understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the rapidly evolving field of Generative AI (GenAI). Designed for professionals across various sectors, this course demystifies AI concepts and explores the capabilities of current GenAI tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and associated MS Apps, Claude, Perplexity, Ideogram, Synthesia, etc.).

Furthermore, this course examines practical applications of AI and GenAI for enhancing productivity, supercharging innovation, and building copilots to aid in leadership or team decision- making all of which can be customized to the needs of the organization. Drawing on extensive experience in implementing AI strategies and training, the course emphasizes responsible and ethical AI use and equips participants with the knowledge to identify opportunities and use cases for AI adoption, implement any necessary internal or external change management, and navigate the changing technological landscape effectively.

Course Instructor: John Gartin, NAU Director of Learning & Organizational Development

John Gartin, Director of Learning & Organizational Development at Northern Arizona University, is a coach and educator with a rich background of over three decades in leadership, team building, program development, and cultivating career readiness.  His diverse background includes 8 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, a faculty member at 5 different colleges and universities, and an NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 women’s rowing coach, earning 6 Conference Championships and 1 NCAA Championship.  He holds a Master’s in Geography researching trans-border environmental systems modeling and a Master's in Organizational Leadership, where his research in the application of LLMs and Generative AI in leadership, career readiness, and team development resulted in the creation and ongoing development of the INSPIRE Methodology of AI Prompt & Context Engineering.
